1940 Junior Championship Final

posted 8 Sep 2011, 07:36 by Unknown user

Ballinagore 1-07  Mental Hospital 0-03

Joe Daly remembers the 1940 Final.

To say that 1940 was a glorious year for Ballinagore is really a false statement as the 1940 championship final wasn't played until 1941. Indeed the 1940 league final didn't take place until February 1942. The football year opened as usual with the league which was played on a home and away basis. In the first round of this competition the potential of the team was apparent. Boher who were beaten in the Junior final in 1939 by Ballynacargy were the opponents. Ballinagore beat them that day and also beat them later on in the year in the return fixture. They also beat Moyvore both home and away that year.

Ballinagore beat Boher in the championship semi-final played in Castletown Geoghegan after an excellent game of football. The final score was Ballinagore 0-14 Boher 0-08. Inny Rovers and the Mental Hospital played in the other semi-final and drew three times. The Mental Hospital won in extra time on the third day. As a result, they final was not played until February 1941 in Cusack Park. The team spent the winter training on a loft of the old flour mill over Williams' shop in Ballinagore village. As Joe says "You could call it a sports centre in Ballinagore back in 1940".

The final was played in February and Joe says "There has not been as bad a day since". Strong winds and heavy rain was the order of the day. Ballinagore were first to score with a point. After a close first half, the teams turned around level at half time, two points apiece. The MentalHospital scored a point early in the second half. However this was to be their last score. Ballinagore went on to score a further 1-05, Paddy McCormack getting the goal. Joe says fitness was the winner for Ballinagore.

The team lined out as follows: Ned Gavin, Frank Deegan, Joe Gannon, Mick Stones, Joe Deegan, Bill Daly, Joe Daly, Patsy Looram, Bill Hannon, Mick Deegan, Sonny Rodgers, Laurence Kiernan, Paddy Kelly, Paddy McCormack, Mick Casey. Subs: Jimmy Stones, Paddy Hyland, Johnny Gannon, Christy Feely and Paddy Curley.

We played our fourth match in this years League on Sunday last, 17th April, in Ballinagore. Ballymore were our opponents on a perfect day for football. After a keenly contested fist fifteen minutes where both sides scored three points, Ballymore took control when they were awarded and duly converted a penalty despite the best efforts of the Ballinagore netminder, Mark Doyle. Ballymore led by the goal at half time, 1-6 to 6 points. The second half was more possitive for Ballinagore and they worked their way back into the game eventually drawing level, and subsequently taking the lead with seven minutes remaining. This was the best display of the Senior team this year and it comes at a crucial time with the championship only a week and a half away. Final score, Ballinagore 0-13, Ballymore 1-9. Team: Mark Doyle, Pierce Corcoran, Pat Heduan, James Keegan, Michael Gannon, James Sheerin (Capt.), Brian Sheerin, Stewart Gavin, Eoin Miller, Shane Heraty, Ciarán Carey, Cathal Ennis, Ian Seery, Tomas McDaniel, Paddy Maloney. ACFL Division 7
Ballinagore 2-07  St. Loman's 2-07

Ballinagore played their first game in this division on Sunday last in Lakepoint Park. Ballinagore opened the scoring with a pointed free after 5 minutes. This was followed by a goal where the St. Loman's keeper dropped a long distance Ciarán Carey shot. St. Loman's scored the following two points but from there on Ballinagore took control with some great points from Ciaran Carey, Declan Claffey and Shane Heraty along with another goal from the fist of William Gavin, following a long delivery from Brian Sheerin. This left the half time score at 2-05 to 0-02 in our favour with the breeze to face into in the second moiety.

The second half was a tighter affair and St. Loman's had the majority of the possession for large parts. They goaled from a penalty shortly into the half and slowly whittled away our lead. A good goal with ten minutes left reduced the margin to one point. Shortly after the sides were level. Things were not looking good for us, however some good passages of play followed and Ciarán Carey was on hand twice to put two points between the sides, the second a lovely kick from a tight angle. With time almost up, St. Loman's persevered and they were rewarded with two late points to snatch a draw. There were some sterling peformances in the full and half-back lines and we would expect this team to build on this result and have more belief in themselves.

Team: Mark Doyle, Robert Gannon, Pat Heduan, Mark King, James Keegan, James Sheerin, Kieran Deegan, Pierce Corcoran, Ciarán Carey (Capt.) 1-3, Brian Sheerin, Shane Heraty 0-2, (1 free), Kevin Gannon, William Gavin 1-0, Ian Seery, Declan Claffey 0-2. Subs: Jason Kiernan for William Gavin, Paul Seery

We had our first outing in the league last Saturday afternoon, 19th February, against Multyfarnham in Multyfarnham. Ballinagore started very well and were 1-3 to 0-1 up after fifteen minutes with scores from Eoin Miller, Willie Gavin and Paddy Maloney. Matters improved even further from there with further scores from Ian Seery, Cathal Ennis and Paddy Maloney. The Half-time score was Ballinagore 3-7, Multyfarnham 0-3. The second half was a different affair with Multyfarnham coming back strongly during the first fifteen minutes. After this the game peetered out with obvious signs of tiredness in both teams due to the heavy ground, and the Townland League finals the previous night. Still it was a good victory for Ballinagore and we now face Kilbeggan in the second round this coming weekend in Pairc an Bodhrán, Ballinagore. Check the fixtues list for time and date. Final score Ballinagore 3-9, Multyfarnham 0-8.
