2003 Football League and Cup Match Reports

ACL Division 2, 13th October 2003

Ballinagore  0-11  Tang  1-10

We played our final league game against Tang last Saturday evening in our opponents venue. Ballinagore started brightly and had opened up a five point lead after twenty minutes, 0-06 to 0-01. We lost Sean Robinson through a knee injury at this stage and a series of pointed frees then brought Tang back into the game. There was the minimum between the sides at half time. The second half was evenly contested throughout, however we conceded a goal midway through the half which put Tang into a lead they didn't relinquish. With light rapidly fading the game turned scrappy in the final ten minutes and saw three players sent off, two from our own team. The first twenty minutes saw us produce some of the best football we played this year with great passing movements and do or die defending on display. However it wasn't to be our day and this defeat means that we will now play in Division 3 next year which is disappointing but hopefully we can pick ourselves up from this and compete well for promotion in 2004. Team: Marty Linnane, Ciaran Carey, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Eddie Quinlan, Louis Ennis, Michael Maloney, Sean Robinson, Paul Seery, Cathal Ennis, Peter Heraty, Shane Heraty, Ger Linnane, Michael Ennis, Christy Maloney. Subs used: Paul Maloney and Martin Seery.

ACL Division 2, 1st September 2003

A depleted Ballinagore side suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Tubberclair in Division 2 of the league last Saturday evening in Ballinagore. It's disappointing to note that some players didn't  turn up for this fixture. Until we unite as a team and get our own approach to the game correct we will never taste success. Our panel is small enough so when we have injuries we need an extra effort from all players to come to training and play games. We have two games left in this division and we will need to pick up some more points in order to ensure we play Division 2 football next season. The team on Saturday was Christy Maloney, Ciaran Carey, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Eddie Quinlan, Louis Ennis, Paul Maloney, Ian Seery, Sean Robinson, Cathal Ennis, Michael Ennis, Shane Heraty, Mark Claffey, Gerry Claffey, Martin Seery. Sub used: Ger Linnane.

ACL Division 2, 25th August 2003

Ballinagore 1-11  Killucan  1-11

Ballinagore travelled to Joristown to play hosts Killucan last Sunday in this Division 2 League fixture. We settled well in this game and made most of the early running with good moves being put together and some great defensive play on show with Pat Heduan playing the game of his life in defense. A goal by Martin Seery and some well taken points left us in the driving seat at half time as we lead by 1-04 to 0-02. Killucan came more into the game in the second half and hit a few points to bring them closer. A disputed goal then brought Killucan level on terms and shortly afterwards they took the lead for the first time with less than ten minutes left on the clock. Ballinagore retained their composure and attacked strongly but we were guilty of some bad finishing which could have secured the points for us. We did draw level in normal time but to our dismay Killucan went back up the field and scored another minor in injury time. However, we just weren't in the mood to lose another league match and Ger Linnane scored a late equaliser right on full time to gain us a share of the spoils and what could ultimately prove to be a very valuable league point. Team: Christy Maloney, Ciaran Carey, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Louis Ennis, Peter Heraty, Eddie Quinlan, Paul Seery, Sean Robinson, Jarlath Mahon, Michael Ennis, Cathal Ennis, Ian Seery, Ger Linnane, Martin Seery. Subs used: Shane Heraty, Paul Maloney, Mark Claffey.

ACL Division 2, 16th August 2003

Ballinagore 2-07  Milltownpass 2-12

We played Milltownpass in this Division 2 League game on Saturday 16th August in Milltownpass. We got off to a great start scoring two goals in the opening ten minutes. However Milltownpass gradually settled into the game and took a few scores themselves before eventually finding the net just before half time. We went in behind by a point at half time. The second half was nip and tuck for most of the period but a defensive error towards the end of the game allowed them in for another goal to leave six between the teams. Try as we may we couldn't come back from this deficit and lost by five in the end. Team: Martin Seery, Pierce Corcoran, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Eddie Quinlan, Louis Ennis, Paul Maloney, Paul Seery, Sean Robinson, Jarlath Mahon, Michael Ennis, Cathal Ennis, Ger Claffey, Ger Linnane, Mark Claffey. Subs used: Shane Heraty, Peter Heraty.

Intermediate Cup, 16th June 2003

Ballinagore  0-11  Maryland 2-09

Ballinagore entertained Maryland in the first round of the Intermediate Cup last Tuesday, 3rd June. This was a game which Maryland lead from start to finish with an early goal giving them a five point lead after ten minutes of play. Ballinagore got more into the game after this but were guilty of some bad shooting and overplaying the ball. We had reduced their lead to three points at the interval. Score at half time was 1-04 to 0-04. The start of the second half was where this game was lost for us as we conceded a second soft goal on Marylands first break forward. We continued to press forward for the remainder of the half and managed to put seven more points on the board but a plethora of missed chances cost us the game in the end. Team: Marty Linnane, Pat Heduan, Enda McCann, Pierce Corcoran, Michael Maloney, Louis Ennis, Eddie Quinlan, Paul Seery, Peter Heraty, Paul Maloney, Ger Linnane, Cathal Ennis, Ian Seery, Peter Robinson, Martin Seery.

ACL Division 2, 12th May 2003

Ballinagore 0-08  Ballymore 0-06

We played Ballymore in the league last Saturday week in Drumraney. This was a match that we could not afford to lose as we had no points to date in the league. We played with a strong breeze in the first half but we didn't capitalise on it and we had to wait over twelve minutes for our first score. We took control of the game then for about ten minutes and put four more points on the board. However we somehow took our foot of the pedal at this stage and Ballymore got in for a point before half time leaving us with just a four point lead and a gale to play into in the second half. Half time score was 0-05 to 0-01 in our favour. Ballymore started the second half very strong with two points within as many minutes. Ballinagore then rallied with some scores of our own which managed to keep the gap between the teams. Ballymore applied a lot of pressure on us throughout this second half but some great defending and some wayward kicking saw us hold out to win by two points. Final score was 0-08 to 0-06. Team: Marty Linnane, Pierce Corcoran, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Louis Ennis, Peter Heraty, Eddie Quinlan, Paul Seery, Eoin Miller, Cathal Ennis, Sean Robinson, Paul Maloney, Ian Seery, Peter Robinson, Martin Seery. Subs:  Jarlath Mahon, Shane Heraty, Gerry Claffey and Alan Dalton.

ACL Division 2, 24th April 2003

Ballinagore  0-05  Athlone  0-16

We played a very strong Athlone senior team on Easter Monday in Division 2 of the League in Ballinagore. We were forced to field without a few regulars and we lost Ger Linnane early on in the game which compounded matters for us. From the outset we knew we were in for a tough game but the team got stuck in and gave it their all. We put some very good moves together but we were unfortunate in front of goal. Half time score was 0-08 to 0-02 in favour of the town side. The second half saw us concede a further two quick points but after this Ballinagore rose their game and scored a few points without reply. Indeed we were in hard luck for two goal opportunities during this period. That said, Vivian Doonan was in fine form for us too with one or two good saves in this half. With less than ten minutes left on the clock there was just six points between the sides but then Athlone with their greater strength and depth took over and finished the game strongly with a number of unanswered scores. Team: Vivian Doonan, Pierce Corcoran, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Ciaran Carey, Louis Ennis, Eddie Quinlan, Eoin Miller, Paul Seery, Sean Robinson, Ger Linnane, Cathal Ennis, Paul Maloney, Ian Seery, Marty Linnane. Subs used: Martin Seery, Shane Heraty, Christy Maloney and Gerry Claffey.

ACL Division 2, 23rd March 2003

Ballinagore  3-04  Maryland 1-11

Ballinagore played their second match in this division in Drumraney on Sunday last, 23rd March. This game was played in ideal weather conditions and was played in the usual sporting manner by two committed teams. Unfortunately, we had to settle for second best in this game but we have ourselves largely to blame for this as we continuously went for goals when points were there for the taking. The half-time score was 1-04 to 1-01 in favour of Maryland but Ballinagore will rue a number of missed opportunities from frees in this first half. An improved performance in the second half saw two more goals for us but even with us finishing strongly, Maryland hung on for the points. Team: Vivian Doonan, Pierce Corcoran, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Shane Heraty, Peter Heraty, Eddie Quinlan, Eoin Miller, Sean Robinson, Ciaran Carey, Jarlath Mahon, Cathal Ennis, Marty Linnane, Ian Seery and Ger Linnane. Subs used: Paul Maloney, Peter Robinson and Martin Seery.

ACFL Division 2, 23rd February 2003

Ballinagore  0-05  St. Malachy's 2-13

We played neighbours St. Malachy's in our first competitive match of the year last Sunday in Ballinagore. What was expected to be a closely fought encounter turned out to be an absolute disaster from our point of view when we were soundly beaten by a stronger, fitter and more committed Castletown outfit. Our team never got going during the hour and were second to every ball. When in possession, we were devoid of ideas and lethargic in our movements. Our defense were under immense pressure throughout, our midfield out-played and our forwards lost their shape as a result. Trailing by 1-04 to 0-01 at half time, any ideas of a comeback were dashed by three quick points from St. Malachy's on the resumption of play. This was a sobering performance for us but one from which we all can and hopefully will learn our lesson. We now know where we stand and exactly how much work is required if we want to achieve anything this year. Training is on Wednesday and Friday nights at 8 o'clock sharp and all players are expected to be there on time. Team : Vivian Doonan, Pierce Corcoran, Enda McCann, Pat Heduan, Marty Linnane, Louis Ennis, Ciaran Carey, Ian Seery, Paul Seery, Sean Robinson, Peter Heraty, Cathal Ennis, Jarlath Mahon, Michael Ennis, Ger Linnane. Subs used : Jimmy Marshall and Martin Seery.
